Ji-Rong Wen, Research Manager
Dr. Ji-Rong Wen is currently a research manager at Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA). He is now leading the Web Data Management projects at MSRA. Dr. Wen received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Renmin University of China. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1999 from the Institute of Computing Technology, the Chinese Academy of Science. Since then, he joined Microsoft Research Asia to work in the areas of Web data management, information retrieval (especially Web search), data mining and machine learning. In the past 8 years at MSRA, he has filed 20+ U.S. patents in Web search and related areas. He is one of the main inventors of Microsoft’s block-based search, deep web search, and object-level search technologies. Dr. Wen has published a number of research papers on prestigious international conferences and journals, such as WWW, SIGIR, VLDB, ICDE, CIDR, ICML, SIGKDD, AAAI, ACM Multimedia, ACM TOIS, IEEE TKDE, etc. He is also very active in related academic communities and served as program committee members or chairs in many international conferences and workshops.

Modern search engines are in fact very complex web data management systems. In this lecture, I will give an overview of the state-of-the-art Web search engine technologies, including:

4. Main research challenges ahead
